DJ Maphorisa Reacts To the Notion That Nigerian DJs Are Destroying Amapiano

Amapiano is the in-thing in South Africa and not Nigeria. However, Nigerian DJS have been experimenting with the genre – and annoying some corer amapiano fans along the way.

Some amapiano buffs in Mzansi insist Nigerian DJs have been butchering the genre of their infatuation, and they’re not having it. But what does a principal amapiano figure, DJ Maphorisa, think about the alleged butchering of the genre by Nigerian DJs?

Just recently, a video popped online showing the Nigerian dance Poco Lee dancing to a song by Busta 929. Apparently a Nigerian DJ had manipulated Busta’s amapiano song, giving it a fast beat.

In a tweet, DJ Maphorisa, one of the Scorpion Kings of South African music, made it clear he just can’t deal. He urged whoever is butchering the genre to desist. But will they?

Amapiano is the zeitgeist in South Africa at the moment. Such is the buzz around the genre that it has snapped several artistes from others, including gqom and hip hop. DJ Maphorisa himself came from gqom. He’s since linked up with the de facto amapiano King Kabza De Small, creating the most formidable cohabitation in the genre to date.

Well, what do you think of DJ Maphorisa’s take on the butchering of amapiano?
