The dream of every artiste is to make it in the music industry and be celebrated. Amapiano artiste DJ Maphorisa has exactly that dream. But it wasn’t until 10 years after he popped on the music scene that he actually got the level of success he had always desired.
How was the journey, and how did he eventually come to his current level of success? The muso will not hesitate telling you it is hard work and of course dedication to his art. DJ Maphorisa is currently an important voice in South Africa’s amapiano universe. But he didn’t start with the genre.
He was a notable gqom figure and has several hits in the genre. He had even worked with Nigeria’s Wizkid. Their collaborative single is a hit with fans to this day.
DJ Maphorisa’s appearance on the amapiano scene is pretty recent, but he has so charmed the industry with his prolific output and hit songs that he is now a recognized darling of the genre, as a solo artiste and as a perennial collaborator with the amapiano king Kabza De Small, whose album launches two days from now.
Well, as the muso would say, it wasn’t easy. It took him 10 years to crack the music industry.
