Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, Comments On The Eastern Cape Tavern Tragedy

Following a catastrophe at the Enyobeni Tavern in East London, at least 20 people have been confirmed dead, and two more are in pretty bad shape in the hospital. 17 people reportedly perished in the pub in Scenery Park, according to Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane. In a hospital, three more people passed away.

A community registry shows that 35 persons in all have been reported missing. Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, a spokesman for the police, said they were still looking into what caused the deaths. He stated that they thought the victims were between the ages of 18 and 20.

In an effort to locate their loved ones, hundreds of locals gathered in front of the pub. They were refused admission by police, who are still searching the area. After irate locals attempted to enter the tavern, Mabuyane issued an appeal for calm.

“Our people will not be able to access the scene, police are busy here. We don’t want to mess up this crime scene. We want a tight case so that we get everyone accountable for this. We still cannot fathom what has happened here. Fortunately, all the experts are here to give us that sense of what exactly has happened. A lot is being said, everyone is saying things, but we don’t want to go with that,” said Mabuyane.
