Eskom Boss André de Ruyter Resigns

It was long expected in some quarters, but not many saw it coming so soon. It has happened anyway. Eskom boss André de Ruyter has resigned from his position.

As South Africa battled with declining capacity, failing power facilities, and correspondingly load shedding, many South Africans had expressed anger with the power problem, loudly blaming it on the Eskom boss.

Even important voices from the ruling African National Congress and the presidency, including Gwede Mantashe, had expressed displeasure with the state of Eskom and power supply generally. Mantashe, for instance, believed that the position of Eskom boss ought to be occupied by someone with technical expertise since the issues facing the power utility company is technical.

Well, André de Ruyter has finally bowed to pressure and ditched his role as Eskom CEO. In handing down his resignation, André de Ruyter had averred, verbatim: “This job is impossible given the current state, form of Eskom.”

Some analysts have pointed out that even with his resignation, it is not yet uhuru for the power behemoth, who is now saddled with finding another CEO, who might or might not solve the problem.

The coming days will reveal a lot. Stay tuned if you please.
