ESKOM’s Disappointing Christmas Load-shedding Record

ESKOM reportedly sets disappointing Load-shedding record this Christmas.

MSN, in a recent report, wrote that yesterday was a sad load-shedding record for Eskom. They called 26 December 2023 the day that represents the longest run of consecutive days that state-operated power utility Eskom managed to keep the lights on this year.

A report by IOL revealed that EskomSePush (ESP) calculated that SA endured 300 days of load-shedding by the beginning of December, more than 6,215 hours. You can quickly check this on the ESP app. Check the hours/days load-shedding record in your suburb by clicking “2023 Wrapped.”

MSN further reports that on Thursday, 14 December 2023, Eskom said, “Improvements to generation capacity and a de-escalation in power usage allowed it to suspend load-shedding indefinitely.” This means that by the end of Tuesday, 26 December, the power would be on for the longest unbroken streak of 2023.

The previous longest streak of uninterrupted power supply in SA was 9 days in October 2023 during the Rugby World Cup when the Springboks made the country proud. Business Tech reports that the record was achieved by ESKOM “due to demand trending lower, breakdowns decreasing, and the return of Koeberg to the power supply.” According to Eskom, demand dropped significantly due to industries shutting down for the holidays.
