One thing athletes have to come to terms with in their careers is that one day they will have to retire. It is inevitable. As we have seen all too often, some of them get carried away by the good life, fail to play ahead and conserve resources, ultimately plunging back into poverty.
The reality is as jarring as it is cutting. Some athletes, unable to come to terms with the reality that they actually messed up and have returned to square one, take their own lives. Some learn their lessons and continue to plod on.
And yet some are aware of what lies ahead and plan before retirement, ensuring a smooth transition from sports into businesses that will sustain them. One person who belongs to the third category is former Kaizer Chiefs star Willard Katsande.
The retired footballer has just acquired two Quantums as part of his drive into the transport business in South Africa, and it made the news across the country.
However, it wasn’t his first foray into the business world. Even before his official retirement from football, he had established a clothing line. Following his retirement, other businesses are popping, most visibly the transport part.
