Franz Marx, Creator of “Egoli,” Dead At 78

It’s another big hit for South Africa’s creative space as writer and “Egoli” creator Franz Marx dies of COVID-19 complications in Pretoria. He was 78.

Fellow Author Leon van Nierop confirmed the death while speaking to newsmen. In a tribute posted to Facebook, Leon admitted he and other younger writers benefitted immensely from Marx’s experience in creative writing. He described Marx as a workaholic who worked in the morning and never wanted to be disturbed then.

Although, he’s got numerous works to his name, some of them stand out, including Agter Elke Man (Behind Each Man) and Egoli – Plek van Goud (Egoli – Place of Gold),  which ran on M-Net for almost 20 seasons.

The news of Marx’s death provoked mourning across South Africa’s creative, with associates recalling fond memories with him. He’ll be sorely missed.

By the way, experts have previously warned, pre-vaccine, that the coronavirus is particularly devastating on the elderly, as their immune systems would likely not be able to withstand the onslaught of the virus.
