George Soros Biography

The man many people know today as George Soros was born György Schwartz to a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. His family changed the surname to Soros much later. He was a kid during the German occupation, a terrible period for all Jews in the country.

Recalling those days, he would state that instead of submitting to their fate, he and his family resisted an evil force that was way stronger than they were. The terrors of that period filled him with life lessons that would serve him well later in life.

He moved to the United States, where he quickly built a reputation as a reliable hedge fund manager. At some point, he was even the head of the largest hedge fund in the world (Quantum Fund), which he founded in 1973.

Through the years, Soros has built an impressive business portfolio that places him among the wealthiest men in the world — in the dollar billionaires league.

He is no longer actively involved in the running of his companies. He left that to his five children about a decade ago and now focuses on charitable initiatives, including his foundations.

Age
