Gospel Artist Pulane Maphari On Being Stripped Of Her SAMA

It’s great to win. But then winning and being stripped of one’s award is, to many out there, the ultimate embarrassment. That’s the situation the gospel singer Pulane Maphari is currently contending with.

She was recently stripped of her SOUTH African Music Award (SAMA), reportedly to preserve the integrity of the award.

According to the Recording Industries South Africa (RiSA), she violated the rules of the SAMA by repackaging an old album as a new one, which contravened the rules of awarding plaques to musicians.

The songstress had won the SAMA in the Best Contemporary Faith Album category but was stripped of the award barely a month after her win. In that case, she can no longer parade herself as a SAMA winner in that category.

On the decision to withdraw her award, she noted that she wished the awarding body had done its due diligence. She said she had no clue she had done something wrong. She was, therefore, surprised that she was stripped of the award.

Even more unsettling, she only realised she had been stripped of her award when she read about it in an article. She didn’t get any information from the SAMA before then.
