In Pictures: SABC News Crew Assaulted On The N2

A news crew from the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was reportedly attacked and crew members injured in Cape Town.

Multiple reports indicate the incident took place in the early hours of Monday on the N2. The affected crew was reported taking clips of the ongoing national shutdown when a man approached their vehicle and struck it with an object.

The object reportedly hit the crew member sitting closest to the window and he had to be hospitalised as a result.
Cape Town’s safety and security MMC JP Smith confirmed the incident while noting that a small group of protesters had collected around the area at the time of the incident. Going into more detail, Sith also noted that there were at least two failed attempts to petrol-bomb the MyCiti busses in the area.

The SABC itself had confirmed the attack on its crew but without giving further details, including the possible identity of the person who could have carried out the assault.

South Africa is facing a crisis of sorts, with the EFF and others clamouring for a national shutdown in its battle against the government of president Cyril Ramaphosa.

How long until the crisis is resolved is something that is unclear at the moment.
