Is Markus Jooste Dead or Missing? Police Can’t Confirm

Police still can’t confirm if Markus Jooste is dead or missing.

After one month of being reported dead, police can’t provide any information on the whereabouts of Markus Jooste’s body or even share plans for a funeral. It is unknown if he is actually dead. According to reports, Jooste said to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on the rocks of the Kwaaiwater beach in Hermanus, near his holiday home. This is still to be confirmed.

The mysterious death was announced a day after he was given a R475 million fine for accounting fraud at multinational holding company Steinhoff. The National Prosecuting Authority said that Jooste had been notified of a warrant of arrest in his name.

According to a recent report by Sunday Independent, police still have no information regarding his death or the location of his body. In a shared statement, Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said that any questions on the whereabouts of Jooste’s body in relation to pathology and mortuary should be directed to the Department of Health.

“The number of police officers responding to an emergency, on the other hand, is indeed an SAPS-related matter … Due to operational reasons, deployment figures are not released to the media. In conclusion, kindly be advised that the death inquest case docket with regards to the death of Markus Jooste is still under investigation, and there are no new developments to report at this stage.”
