Italy: Most-Wanted Mafia Boss Matteo Messina Denaro Nabbed In Palermo, Sicily

Wanted. No, take that back. Matteo Messina Denaro is no longer wanted by the Italian authorities. The mafia boss was recently captured in a private clinic in Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

Fugitive from the law for the past three decades, Denaro’s end eventually came when he was detained in a private clinic where he was being treated for cancer under a fake identity. According to local media, about 100 military personnel was involved in his arrest.

Reportedly the boss of the notorious Cosa Nostra Mafia. Denaro was tried in absentia in 2002 for numerous murders and handed a life sentence. But the authorities were unable to capture him since then.

It turned out Italians were more than happy to see Denaro arrested, as many of them filed into the street to applaud the Carabinieri for a job well done – as seen in a clip currently circulating on social media.

Denaro is considered one of the most brutal mafia bosses ever. He had reportedly masterminded the killing of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, bomb attacks in Milan, Florence and Rome, and even boasted that he could fill a cemetery with his victims.

Well, could it be said those days are over following his arrest?
