Mzansi reacts as Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela is involved in a heated exchange with advocate Malesela Teffo.
Following the adjournment of court proceedings on the Senzo Meyiwa murder case last week, proceedings resumed rather dramatically on Monday, June 13. Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela and advocate Malesela Teffo were involved in a bitter exchange.
The court was getting feedback from advocate Zandile Mshololo on the second docket opened on the case, which she received last week. Mshololo had requested an adjournment to go through the docket upon receiving it. Teffo had asked to make his submissions first and recap the whole event of the second docket.
Unfortunately, his request was denied by the Judge. “I need to be heard, please,” Teffo said. Maumela replied,
“The problem that I have is that, when advocate Teffo thinks it’s time for him to speak, things must happen. The other day I had to warn you when you demanded things to happen.”
“I’m saying now, as the presiding officer in this case, it is time to give advocate Mshololo the opportunity to proceed with what she started in your absence. She is not done,” Maumela said.
Teffo still argued that he should be given an opportunity to speak. To which the judge replied in a raised voice, “I made a ruling, advocate Teffo, that we are not going to debate about what you want to talk about,” The exchanged continued after lunch. Social media users have reacted to this.
