Riky Rick would have been 35 on July 20 this year. But the muso is no longer here. Still, in the spirit of his 35th birthday, Legends Barbershop, a personal grooming brand with which he was associated, is out to honour him by relaunching.
Legends Barbershop is a leading barbershop in South Africa, and Riky Rick had represented the brand at some point. Now that the champ is no more, the shop is determined to do well by him – in his memory, so to speak.
In a post on its Instagram page, the shop noted it is launching Legends Barbershop at Waterfall Corner in honour of the late Legend. In addition, it promised 35 free haircuts to the first 35 persons on the condition that they bring warm clothes or a blanket to support an orphanage in the community.
The gesture once again ignited memories of Riky Rick, who had hung himself in his studio in February, reportedly after a protracted battle with depression. His death back then sent shockwaves across the music universe. No one saw it coming. Life happens, as someone noted.
Since his death, associates and colleagues have been memorialising him the way they see fit. Legends barbershop has just shown Mzansi another way.
