Lerato Chabangu’s Lessons From Blowing His Money On “Useless Things”

It is often said that those who don’t manage their resources well will most likely lose them all and fall back to zero – to hard times they had previously left. This is the reality right now of retired footballer Lerato Chabangu.

Once upon a time, when he was active on the pitch, he was a top earner, with the resources to afford a lot of luxuries. And indeed, as he would confess later, he cle his money on them – what he would now, back to his struggles, call “useless things.”

Chabangu is one of several footballers who have fallen from grace into disgrace, from money into patent and embarrassing lack. The issue of players – and indeed other known figures – squandering their wealth and falling back into poverty is not a South African reality alone.

Across the world, the same happens and will continue to happen because some people may not take the lessons from others’ fall from grace.

To Lerato’s credit, though, he had admitted he made monstrous mistakes and he is trying to get back on his feet. He’s come close to killing himself in the past. But he’s still standing. And you know the saying, where there is life, there is hope.
