Levitating: Artikal Sound System Sues Dua Lipa For Copyright Violation

Artikal Sound System, a Delray Beach-based reggae collective, is suing Grammy-winning singer Dua Lipa for copyright infringement.

In a suit filed in a Los Angeles federal court earlier this week, the band is claiming that Dua Lipa’s soaraway single “Levitating,” from her 2020 album “Future Nostalgia,” was lifted from the band’s 2017 release, “Live Your Life.”

At the time of writing, Dua Lipa had not responded to claims that she copied the work of the reggae group. The songstress is currently on tour to promote her “Future Nostalgia” album. The tour was delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

By the way, “Levitating,” which featured American rapper DaBaby, was a big hit at the time of release and it remains a favorite among some of Dua Lipa’s fans.

Interestingly, “Live Your Life,” from which Artikal Sound System is claiming Dua Lipa had copied, had not done as well as Dua Lipa’s number.

With the case currently in court, it will be interesting to see in whose favor the courts will rule. If the court should rule “Levitating” as violating the copyright of the reggae group, then the song might be taken down from YouTube where it currently has over 476 million views.
