Mabuza’s Planned Resignation: Opposition Mounts Against Paul Mashatile Becoming Deputy President

A new drama is playing out in the ANC over who might take over as deputy president of South Africa following the planned resignation of the current president David Mabuza.

David Mabuza had served as deputy president to Cyril Ramaphosa from day one. And he recently indicated interest in resigning from the position following a meeting with President Ramaphosa. He was, however, asked to delay his resignation as the party searches for a replacement.

The reason for his planned resignation is not exactly clear, as he was not really the one targeted by the public and asked to resign but President Ramaphosa. The president had condemned for hiding the heist at his Phala Phala farm in 2020 and asked about the source of the millions in foreign currency found on the property. The public had called for the president’s resignation but he refused to step down.

Instead, in a twist, his deputy is the one desirous of stepping down. But who might take over in the vent of his resignation? Paul Mashatile is the deputy president of the ANC. But some of the lieutenants of president Cyril Ramaphosa insist that his occupying that position does not mean he is automatically qualified to be the second in command in the country.

So who takes over from Mabuza?
