Mamelodi Sundowns Trounces Kenya’s Vihiga Queens In CAF Champions League In Egypt

Mamelodi Sundowns women’s team got off to a winning start at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday, beating Kenya’s Vihiga Queens 1 goal to nil in the CAF Women’s Champions league.

The South Africans started on a brilliant note, netting the first and only goal of the game in the fourth minute, courtesy of the striker Melinda Kgadiete.

After her first goal, Melinda Kgadiete had missed a chance to open the Kenyan net and missed yet another in the second half.

The Sundowns ladies kept the pressure on their Kenyan counterparts but could not reach the Kenyan net after their first success. The Kenyans tightened their defences, keeping the South Africans away.

Much of the credit for the Kenyans’ strong finish went to their goalkeeper, Lilian Onyango, who was ultimately named “Woman of the Match” for her remarkable goalkeeping.

Agnes Nkosi, assistant to Mamelodi Sundowns female team, acknowledged Lilian Onyango’s performance in the match, stating that Lilian did great and denied them their chances of more goals. But it’s something her team would work on, according to her.

For her part, having won “Woman of the Match,” Lilian said she’s motivated to work harder.

Sundowns will face Nigeria’s Rivers Angels on Tuesday.
