The maskandi genre suffered a severe blow in South Africa after genre ace Khalasi Gumede was gunned down while returning from a gig.
The songster’s brother, Njabulo Gumede, who witnessed the event, stated that they were coming from a gig in KwaMashu, north of Durban, when a shot rang out.
Khalasi Gumede was said to be walking behind with his dancers at the time. The group scattered in different directions after the shot pierced the evening. According to Njabulo, he fled home.
Unable to find Khalasi at home, he stated that he’d gone back to look for him. He found his brother on the scene where they had been at the time a shot rang out. Khalasi was in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
According to Njabulo, Khalasi has no enemies and he’s clueless who could have fired the shot. A case of murder has since been opened.
Khalasi Gumede leaves behind a girlfriend, who’s said to be pregnant for him. She was disconsolate at the news of his passing.
