MTV Europe Music Awards 2023 Cancelled Due to the Israel-Gaza Crisis

The MTV Europe Music Awards 2023, formerly slated for November, has been canceled due to the Israel-Gaza war.

According to recent reports, MTV has canceled the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards, previously scheduled to happen on November 5 this year. The news comes in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. The show featured nominations for the world’s most prominent stars, including Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more.

Announcing the cancellation, the channel cited the “volatility of world events.” They also expressed the need for an “abundance of caution.” They also revealed that the reason for the cancellation was to prioritize the safety of the staff, artists, crew, fans, and partners, who come from various parts of the world to be a part of the event.

The channel said, “The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.”

This year’s event saw the introduction of a new category tagged “Best Afrobeats,” featuring nominations for Asake, Aya Nakamura, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
