New Zealand vs South Africa 2022 1st Test Highlights: Blackcaps Take 1st Innings Lead

Blackcals take 1st Innings lead at the the New Zealand vs South Africa 2022 1st Test.

Day one of the 1st test of South Africa against New Zealand in Christchurch saw both teams bring their A-game. Innings had only lasted less than two sessions after which it was sent in to bat in bowler-friendly conditions.

New Zealand, who are current world champions played host to South Africa  in the two-match Test series. The first test was scheduled to happen at 3:30AM IST at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, February 17. Before the match, New Zealand had never won a test series against their opponents, South Africa.

With just one victory over the Proteas (in 20 attempts), the hosts had hoped to claim victory and change their record. Back in 2017, when South Africa faced the New Zealand’s Black Caps, they won 1-0. The Black Caps’ most recent series against Bangladesh saw them draw. They also previously suffered a loss at home, so hopes were that they would succeed and claim victory over South Africa.

Before the 1st Test, everyone expected South Africa to take victory due to their previous record. Following Ross Taylor’s retirement and Williamson’s elbow injury, New Zealand played without them. Tom Latham led the team. South Africa played without Keagan Petersen (who tested positive for Covid). Dean Ejgar led the team.
