Nigerian Reggae Champ Majek Fashek Dead At 57

The death has been announced of Nigeria's reggae musician Majek Fashek. He was aged 57 years.

Contrary to the belief held by some that the songster was euthanized, his manager, Omenka Uzoma, announced that Majek Fashek died in his sleep.

Although Uzoma did not announce the cause of death, it is on record Majek Mashek was battling drug addiction.

Prior to his death, Majek Fashek, whose birth name is Majekodunmi Fasheke, was one of the notable voices on Nigeria’s reggae orbit. He had his best years in the early 80s and the 90s.

His contributions to Nigeria’s music scene is irreproachable, especially so as he was one of the advocates for Nelson Mandela’s freedom in the dark days of apartheid in South Africa.

His song “Free Africa, Free Mandela” was a hit with many in 1992. That song will still pass for an anthem of freedom today.

The announcement of his death shocked many, especially as he was said to have been receiving the best treatment at a hospital in London courtesy of the magnanimity of Femi Otedola.

He will be sorely missed for what he stood for: freedom and the dignity of black life.
