OscarsLoss: Ethan Hawke Shares Advice From Denzel Washington

In every arena or competition, there will always be those who win and those who don’t win. But how people handle their wins or losses makes all the difference.

Well, actor Ethan Hawke has just shared some insights into this reality and how he takes things. The “Training Day” star was nominated for the 2002 Academy Awards but ended up not winning it.

Of course, for most people, the goal is not only to be nominated but to win awards as well. But not everyone ends up winning. And, in the case of Ethan, he learned a vital lesson from his compatriot and older colleague Denzel Washington.

While awards are cool, it turns out that Washington doesn’t place too much emphasis on them. He even told Ethan that losing was better. The veteran actor sees actors as elevating the status of an award they win and not vice versa.

In his words, “You don’t want an award to improve your status — you want to improve the award’s status. That’s the way he thinks.” Ethan revealed this much during an appearance on an episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?

Washington is already an icon in the industry – a man to whom many look up. So, of course, his words mean a lot.
