He recently “answered” his sangoma calling, leading to mixed reactions from across South Africa. Now Phelo Bala has shed some light on the whole controversy, affirming that the call of a local healer (sangoma) is pretty challenging.
According to the actor, his sangoma calling is not a fashion statement on his part but a call he answered eight years ago – although the public might not have been aware of it then. But now they are.
And with that awareness comes reactions. In a recent post on her Instagram story, the actress Khanyi Mbau had seemingly taken a swipe at celebrities who had taken up the sangoma mantle, noting that most don’t have the calling but are just depressed. She then recommended antidepressants for them to get their lives back.
Her take elicited mixed reactions, with several of her fans noting that they supported her verdict.
For his part, Phelo Bala isn’t much concerned about the public’s verdict on his sangoma calling. In a recent post on his Instagram page, the famous actor shared a picture of him in his traditional sangoma attire performing some rights. “Emakhosini,” he wrote in the caption.
Celebrity sangomas like Zodwa Wabantu, Gogo Maweni and Gigi Lamayne were in the comment section to support him.
