Plane Ticket Price Skyrockets

Mzansi panics as flight ticket prices skyrocket.

The cost of flying in Mzansi has become something only the rich can afford. There is a current scarcity of tickets, and we hear that the prices could quadruple as time goes on. Mail & Guardian reports that the cost of international flights has also risen drastically.

Further reports reveal that this is due to the war happening in Ukraine. M&G also reports that Mzansi’s most popular route, Johannesburg to Cape Town, tickets were sold out when the article was published (October 6th till October 10th). It further reported that a one-way ticket on FlySafair cost R3 284.

Airlink reportedly charges more, charging R5 279 for one-way flight tickets. In a shared statement, Aviation Analyst Desmond Latham said, “It’s a bit like the 1970s and 1980s when you had to plan your flights a year ahead. Gone are the days where you could just say: ‘Let’s fly to Cape Town next week.’ If you wanted to get there for Christmas, you should have booked in August.”

He revealed that travelers would have to book flights ahead of time. M&G also reports that the prices of domestic flight tickets soared after the collapse of Comair, the owner of low-cost carrier Kulula and the South African partner of British Airways.
