In response to the spake of crime in the area and to pacify aggrieved protesters, South Africa’s police affairs minister Bheki Cele had noted that the government would intervene to bring succour to residents.

Now, according to the minister, at least 30 members of the police’s tactical response team will be stationed in the area. In contrast, 16 police vehicles will be stationed in the local police station.

The minister made the disclosure during a visit to the area. Among the reasons some residents gave for the proliferation of crime in the area are corruption, low manpower among the security agencies, and lax immigration laws.

With the intervention that the minister has announced, it will be interesting to see if there will be a marked drop in crime.

By the way, Bheki Cele had been previously criticised for his handling of the July unrest last year, and some of his critics, including EFF’s Julius Malema, had called for him to resign as police minister. He had dismissed the idea of resigning his position, however.
