Quavo has announced the launch of the “SPARK Grants” program, which is in collaboration with his Rocket Foundation and aims to assist groups that reduce community violence in Atlanta, Georgia, and other areas.
The rapper, who started his career as one-third of the defunct Migos rap group, established the Rocket Foundation in 2022 in memory of his nephew Takeoff, a member of the trio who was shot and died in 2022. As a result of Takeoff’s passing, the group set out to reduce gun violence in America and began operations in Atlanta as a springboard for additional gun control measures across the nation.
Ten Atlanta-based organizations will receive $10,000 each from the “Sparks Grants” to support their communities and spread the foundation’s message. A total of $100,000 in awards will be given out. The news was made following Quavo’s encounter with Vice President Kamala Harris in September of last year in Washington, D.C., where he and his family participated in the Congressional Black Caucus.
Expanding on the Rocket Foundation’s gun control mission, the White House established the Office of Gun Violence Prevention the next day. Grant applications are open to organizations starting today, March 20, and must be submitted by April 21. The grant winners will be revealed on June 18, which is Takeoff’s birthday, as well as during the month-long National Gun Violence Awareness Month.
