RICO Charges: Hip-Hop Historians, Others For Young Thug’s Defence

Young Thug’s RICO nightmare continues, but the rapper isn’t throwing his hands in surrender either. He’s fighting with every breath in him. After all, jail is not a place anyone would love to be.

The songster has been in jail since May following his arrest alongside some of his associates, including his brother Unfoonk and label mate Gunna. While both have struck plea bargains with the authorities and are now free men, Young Thug is still a jailbird.

So he has been working assiduously to get out. He has got a defence team that will call on some rap and lyrics authorities to testify in his RICO trial. according to sources, among those expected to act as a witness is Dr Erik Nielson, author of “Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics and Guilt in America.” He will come in as a hip-hop historian/expert.

Another is Dr Charis Kubrin, a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Video and phone analysis experts will also be on the ground as part of Thugger’s defence.

As early as January 5, the Jury selection for the trial will begin. For Thugger, markedly, it is not yet uhuru. It remains to be seen what turn the case will take next year.
