Motorists are hereby advised to avoid Hendrick Potgieter Road due to a collapsed bridge in Roodepoort, City of Johannesburg. The injunction from the city was clear enough to forestall any mishap following the unexpected collapse of the bridge.
In a public notice, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport announced the closure of the bridge on December 13. It also noted that sections of the road between Johan and Van Staden Street had been closed to traffic.
The department gave no timeline for when the bridge might be reopened but simply noted that it will be closed for the foreseeable future while investigations progress. After that, maybe work might begin on the bridge. For those who might want to report poor road conditions, the department dropped a list of contact persons and phone numbers.
The closure of the bridge will, of course, affect the flow of traffic elsewhere as motorists adopt new routes to get to their destination.
Records show that although the bridge has collapsed, there is no evidence of a single casualty. Except some motorists should choose to violate the warning to steer clear of the collapsed bridge, the possibility of an accident there is as good as nil.
