SA’s Celebrated Icons Model Thebe Magugu’s R14 500 Luxe Lobola Dresses

South Africa’s biggest icons appear as models for luxury fashion brand Thebe Magugu’s R14 500 luxe lobola dresses.

Mzansi is proud to see South African luxury fashion brand Thebe Magugu unveil its latest collection which celebrates the lobola negotiations in SA.

Titled ‘Heritage III: Lobola Negotiations,’ the luxury collection was first teased early in mid-April in an Instagram post. It featured R100 Thebe Magugu banknotes and the name of the collection. Later on, the brand new published several posts, including one with Dr John Kani and the release date.

The collection was officially unveiled on Sunday, revealing a picture featuring 18 famous South African celebrities wearing the heritage capsule. According to The South African, the collection aims to explore the South African marriage tradition known as Lobola.

The brand wrote in the captions,

“Exclusive to British Vogue, this instalment explores ‘Lobola,’ which is a centuries-old negotiation process in anticipation of eventual marriage, where the family of the groom approaches the family of the bride with an offer – traditionally cattle, contemporarily money – in ‘exchange’ for the bride herself.

“This is meant to be symbolic rather than ownership, and the exact margins of this practice change from culture to culture.”

The collection features illustrations of nine South African tribes, including Zulu, Pedi, Xhosa, Tsonga, Swati, Sotho, Tswana, Venda, and Ndebele.
