Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial Postponed Again – To 2023

In a move that will surprise some observers and yet not surprise others, the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial was postponed again. The newest date for the trial is May 2023.

But why would the trail, which has been postponed several times already, be postponed again? It turned out that two of the accused had hired new legal representatives to take over their case. And now the new attorneys have to be given sufficient time to familiarize themselves with the docket.

A third key state witness was scheduled to be introduced on Monday, November 21, but due to the changes, the witness, who has yet to be named, will not testify until May 2023.

Advocate Sipho Ramosepele was co-opted to replace Advocate Timothy Tshepo Thobane of TT Thobane Attorneys. Thobane had no problem with the change, however, describing himself as a professional who understands a client’s rights to change attorneys as they please.

The prosecuting attorney, Advocate George Baloyi, admitted he was informed of the changes at the last minute but still has no objections to the request for a postponement.

With the prosecuting attorney’s approval, the case is now scheduled for hearing next year.

Senzo Meyiwa was assassinated in 2014 while visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at her family’s Vosloorus home.
