Tennis legend Serena Williams and supermodel Karlie Kloss both revealed their pregnancies during interviews on the event’s not-so-red carpet.
Williams’ announcement was especially poignant given that she left tennis last year to have her second child. In an August issue of Vogue, the 23-time Grand Slam champion stated, “I never wanted to choose between tennis and family.” I do not believe it is reasonable.” At 41, Williams also expressed her desire to focus more on her business interests. She was accompanied by her hubby, Alexis Ohanian, with whom she shares a 5-year-old daughter, Olympia.
In contrast to her first pregnancy announcement, which was accidentally shared on Snapchat, Williams was able to share her news with more agency this time. She boldly exhibited her baby belly during an interview with Vogue live stream, hosted by La La Anthony, alongside her husband. The couple has been recurring guests at the Met Gala, attending the event in 2021, 2019, and 2017.
Karlie Kloss, 30, announced her pregnancy in an interview with Vogue livestream presenter Emma Chamberlain earlier in the evening. The announcement was met with cheers and an offer of babysitting from the influencer. Levi was born in March 2021 to Kloss and Josh Kushner, who are already parents.
Both women showed off their baby bumps on the red carpet, wearing outfits that paid tribute to the event’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Williams donned a Gucci mermaid-cut gown with pleated sleeves, crisp white cuffs, and diamanté trim around the skirt and neckline. In a nod to Chanel’s favorite motif, pearls, she accessorized her ensemble with a pearl headband and Tiffany & Co. necklaces, along with floral diamond earrings and a white gold ring.
Kloss opted for a black long-sleeve Loewe dress with a trompe l’oeil effect featuring images of bangles on each sleeve, gold necklaces on the neckline, and gold necklaces as a belt on the waist. She accessorized her look with multiple strands of pearls, pearl earrings, and a pearl belt.
The Costume Institute’s annual exhibition and the Met Gala, an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, take place simultaneously. This year’s theme honored the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. Superstars such Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, served as co-chairs for the 2023 event.
