Shakira Facing Trial In Spain For Alleged Tax Evasion

It isn’t the best of times for celebrated Colombian singer Shakira as the spectre of jail time stares her in the face amid tax evasion charges.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer failed to reach an agreement with prosecutors and will go to trial insisting on her innocence. The only drawback to her going to trial is that the court might not agree on her innocence, in which case she might end up in jail if convicted.

In a statement, Shakir and her legal team insist the case is a total violation of her legal right. However, the statement also noted that she’s always shown “impeccable behaviour” as a person and as a taxpayer.

The case didn’t start today, however. Instead, it all started last year, 2021. Back then, a judge in a court near Barcelona had ruled that the songstress could stand trial over tax evasion in the sum of about 14.5 million euros.

The prosecuting magistrate posited that there is “sufficient evidence” to hold a trial for the songstress, citing 2012, 2013 and 2014 as the years when she evaded taxes.

With Shakira not budging about her innocence and the prosecution getting ahead with the case, it will be interesting to see what direction it will date.
