In South Africa, now and again, one hears is inundated with the news that a musician fails to show up after taking money for a show. Some refund the money while others carry on like nothing happened – until they are called out.
This has happened several times and involved several notable musicians, including the “Wololo” hitmaker Babes Wodumo.
Pholoso Masombuka, the South African rapper known by the stage name Toss, is the latest no-show in tow. The songster had reportedly been booked by Dito’s Bar and Braai but couldn’t make it the first time, so the event had to be rescheduled.
On the rescheduled date, he was said to have refused to perform because there was a power cut and he wouldn’t work using a generator but asked for the balance of payment. He had already been offed R12,500 through his manager Silindile Mpatho, which was the sum (50 per cent) requested before he could perform, The other 50 per cent would have been paid after the performance.
Toss’s action didn’t sit with the event promoter, Skhulu Mqolo, who is now keen on recovering his money from the “uMlando” hitmaker.\
It remains to be seen how the issue will be resolved between both parties. Stay tuned if you please.
