SPCA Trends In Mzansi Following The Mauling To Death Of A Kid In Bloemfontein

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is currently trending in South Africa Twitter following the mauling to death of a child by a pitbull.

There is a trending advocacy for owners of pitbulls to surrender the fierce dog breed to the SPCA. The reactions to the call have been pretty mixed, however.

While some Twitter users, including the actor Mohale Motaung, called for pitbull owners to surrender their dogs, some tweeps faulted the general call, noting that individual owners can take care of their animals and prevent them from causing harm to members of the public. And yet, some Twitter users urged the ladies not to forget to submit their abusive boyfriends to the SPCA.

The current campaign arose in response to the mauling to death of an eight-year-old boy in Bloemfontein. A pitbull had reportedly jumped over the fence to where the kid was playing and mauled him to death. The dog had to be shot dead by the police, but it was too late to save the boy.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, the dog had escaped from its enclosure, jumped over the fence, and attacked the kid.

The police are urging people with dogs that could be a danger to the public to surrender them.
