Sports, Arts & Culture Ministry: Nathi Mthethwa Out, Zizi Kodwa In

It is the end of an era for Nathi Mthethwa as he exits his role as South Africa’s minister of sports, arts and culture. Appointed in his place is Zizi Kodwa, who previously served as deputy minister of state security.

Nathi Mthethwa’s exit is something many South Africans have actually looked forward to, especially given how he handled the ministry during the pandemic. Many South African artists were angry with him for neither showing empathy nor showing leadership while many entertainers were going hungry because the country was on lockdown and gigs dried up.

One notable figure who had tackled the minister at the time was Kelly Khumalo. The songstress had accused the minister of indifference to the suffering of the people and even suggested that artists should go and live with the minister so that he could take care of them.

Zizi Kodwa is a former ANC spokesperson and one of those who had testified before the State Capture Commission. It remains to be seen how the new minister will perform in his role and if he would restore confidence in the ability of the ministry to live up to expectations in the Rainbow Nation. Time will tell. Stay tuned.
