Streaming giant Spotify recently released a report to promote transparency and encourage artists to put their works out there. from the report, it could be seen that the amapiano genre is no longer a local affair but is now being enjoyed across several countries in Europe and beyond.
For instance, the report shows that streams in countries outside sub-Saharan Africa have increased massively. The genre also generated revenue totalling nearly R200 million. The revenue to amapiano music creators has also increased by about 30 per cent.
Amapinao has not always been this popular actually. At some point, many dismissed it as a passing fad and warned others not to depend on it to sustain their musical relevance. Despite the earlier fears about the genre not going anywhere, amapiano has actually exceeded the expectations of many.
So strong is the power and appeal of the genre at the moment that musicians from hip-hop and other genres are quietly joining the amapiano wave. This will most likely continue
