Steve Hofmeyr Apologizes For Hurtful LGBTQ+ Comments Ahead Of Court Settlement

Steve Hofmeyr, a singer from South Africa, has apologized for his statements toward the LGBTQ+ community. This comes before a settlement was struck with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The settlement, which was an order of the court, stipulates that Hofmeyr must pay R100,000 to the OUT LGBT Well-being organization and its legal fees. Also, he must participate in a diversity and exclusivity awareness session that the SAHRC will host.

In a post that has since been removed from Facebook, Hofmeyr voiced her disapproval of a policy decision made by the Walt Disney Company to assign sexual identities to the characters in its films. He said that children would learn to behave like animals if these identities were acknowledged and that the LGBTQ+ group was in favor of grooming youngsters.

Due to Hofmeyr’s comments on social media, the SAHRC and OUT have taken legal action against him. Since then, Hofmeyr has admitted that the statements were damaging to members of the LGBTQ+ community, and he has apologized unreservedly to those members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as to any other member of the public who was offended by his words.

According to SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), the settlement emphasizes the significance of promoting and defending the rights of all persons, whether their sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other personal trait.
