Telkom Sues Ramaphosa Over SIU Probe

Unimpressed with President Ramaphosa’s attempt to probe the semi-state-owned corporation, Telkom has taken the president to court in a bid to stop the investigation.

In January, President Ramaphosa asked the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to probe the company to unearth alleged corruption and dealings in countries like Mauritius and Nigeria through companies that have already been sold.

The investigation will sieve through Telkom operations from as far back as 2006. However, the company is having none of it and has filed a case at the North Gauteng High Court to stop the investigation.

Telkom believes the investigation is actually in bad faith, and some Telkom insiders posit that, in reality, the case only started after Edward Scott lodged a complaint with the SIU.

Scott, who runs Phutuma Network, had reportedly tendered for telex business back in 2005, albeit without success. The Phutuma boss had allegedly approached the SIU, which then asked the president for permission to investigate the case.

Well, Telkom is having none of this and has approached the courts to stop it all. It remains to be seen if the company, which recently got into acquisition talks with MTN, will ultimately triumph. Stay tuned for more details if you please.
