Thabo Bester’s mother, Meisie has opened up about living in fear since he was rearrested and says she wants nothing to do with his trial.
Last year, Thabo Bester, nicknamed the Facebook Rapist, was apprehended after escaping prison and being on the run. The convicted man was serving at the Mangaung Correctional Facility, with the help of his girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, escaped but was caught while on the run.
His mother recently spoke to eNCA about how his trial has affected her. She said she can no longer trust people who claim to come and visit her. This makes her rely on her neighbours to verify who anyone is. She also shared that things have been difficult since getting her son an ID and changing her surname back to Bester.
Bester’s mom said she could not get her SASSA social grant and was referred to the SASSA website. She still couldn’t get it despite all she did. She said, “I have to beg my neighbours for food,” she said.
She also revealed that her community victimizes her because of her surname and makes fun of her. She admitted that she is concerned about her other sons’ safety. She said she wanted nothing to do with Thabo’s trial and would not want to testify.
