Thapelo Amad Is The New Mayor of Johannesburg

Al Jama-ah’s Thapelo Amad has been officially sworn in as the new mayor of Johannesburg.

Johannesburg now has a new Mayor, and his name is Thapelo Amad. This comes after a no-confidence vote in DA’s Mpho Phalatse. Thapelo Amad was officially sworn in as the new mayor on Friday. In his acceptance speech, the new mayor vowed to tackle service delivery and financial stability.

Representing Al Jama-ah, Amad said it wasn’t a secret that he had inherited a city under massive financial strain. He also stressed the need for financial stability to be prioritized. According to him, the focus will be on collecting revenue. He will urgently revisit the R2 billion loan the DA wanted from the Development Bank of SA.

According to News24, the motion to obtain a loan was rejected twice after the DA brought it up. The new mayor also said he would focus his energy on the electricity crisis. He said,

“Energy security is one of the key priorities. We need to fix ageing infrastructure, including roads which have become dangerous due to potholes. We also need to fix drains which have led to flooding.”
