Tshwane Council To Takes Shot At Electing New Mayo On Wednesday

After Murunwa Makwarela stepped down as Tshwane’s mayor, there have been concerted efforts to elect a new mayor for the city. But that is yet to bear fruit.

Makwarela had stepped down over an allegedly false report but insisted that it had nothing to do with his exit. According to him, he resigned to protect the integrity of his office – whatever that means, The reality on the ground is that Tshwane has had no mayor since and needs to have one.

There was to have been an election last Friday to elect a new mayor but it was a flop because councillors from the Democratic Alliance (DA) walked out alongside their coalition members.

With the failure to elect a new mayor last Friday, the council will make another attempt to elect a mayor on Wednesday. Whether that would be a success is unclear. However, the ANC is gearing up to kick out what it calls the “disastrous seven-year reign” of the DA in Tshwane.

All eyes are on the city as it tries to elect a new mayor. The immediate past mayor had resigned after he allegedly forged a court letter claiming that he has been rehabilitated from insolvency. Watch out for Wednesday.
