Twitter Tackles The India Government In Court

Microblogging platform Twitter is reportedly taking the Indian government to court over what it thinks is the former’s attempt to muzzle opposition figures and other critics of the government.

The Indian government asked the platform to some accounts and content from its site. Still, Twitter isn’t having it as the platform sees the odder as nothing more than an attempt to sensor entities with legitimate grievances.

Specifically, the Indian government, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi currently heads, wants Twitter to censor accounts and posts complaining about declining internet freedom and subtle repression by the government.

Twitter filed its case against the government in a court in Bangalore. Twitter is objecting to the government’s request because it thinks it is fundamentally wrong to do so.

This isn’t the first time the social media platform will have a brush with the government, however. Just last year, during the anti-government protests by farmers, Twitter had been ordered to take down dozens of posts supporting the farmers’ advocacy.

With the latest round of conflict, it will be interesting to see who will emerge triumphant in the battle between Twitter and the Indian government. India is one of a few countries where Twitter had been asked to take down accounts of critical voices.
