Ukhozi FM/SABC Songs Of The Year Nominees, Potential Winners And How To Vote

It’s that time of the year again when famous radio station Ukhozi FM draws up a list of songs for the Song of the Year competition. By that they mean songs which made the most impact in the year in review.

The coronavirus pandemic may have slowed down the music industry a bit, but then musos managed to release some sterling numbers, some of them contenders for the Song of the Year scudetto.

The previous year’s list (2019) radically divided social media users. Some fans think the list omitted more deserving songs/ artistes and propped in their places artistes who shouldn’t be there.

Specifically, some fans accused Ukhozi FM of been biased against Limpopo artistes and their music, from Master KG to Makhadzi. In fact, so heated was the drama last year that a businessman took the matter to court.

Determined to avoid the legal issues of the previous year, Ukhozi FM announced it has addressed every legal issue that could possibly provoke last year’s legal drama. It insists it doesn’t anticipate any problems this year.

Contending for the song of the year 2020 are Kelly Khumalo (with the song “Empini”), Azana (“Your Love”), DJ Hlo (“Festive”), Big Zulu, Riky Rick and Intaba Yase Dubai (“Imali Eningi”).

Others are Mapara A Jazz, Ntosh Gazi and Colano (“John Vuli Gate”), Igcokama Elisha (“Amageja”), Soa Matrix, Shaun 101 and Soulful G  (“Uthando”), Khuzani and Love Dubazane (“Ijele”), Nomcebo Zikode and Master KG (“Xola Moya Wami”), and MFR Souls, Major League DJz Kamo Mphela and Bontle Smith (“Amakiniki”).

Ukhozi FM has urged listeners to vote for any artiste/ song of their choice. To vote, a listener need only send the number of their favourite song/ artiste(s) to 33665. See the flier on how to vote below.

By the way, the initiative is supported by Standard Bank and SABC.

Who Might Win?

A month before now, we would have said Mapara A Jazz’s “John Vuli Gate.” But the popularity of the song has waned remarkably. Of all the songs on the list, none is generating as much buzz as Big Zulu and his pals’ “Imali Eningi” hit.

The song has spawned a dance challenge which almost every big-name celebrity has indulged in. So we give our vote to the song as the ultimate winner.

Have you any idea who might win, though? You’re welcome ro share your thoughts in the comments below, not forgetting to vote, of course.
