Uncertainty As Eskom Emfuleni Attaches Assets Of Emfuleni Municipality Over Unpaid Debt (Video)

Eskom recently obtained a court judgment that empowered it to attach the assets of the Emfuleni municipality over an unpaid debt of about R5.3 billion. However, the judgment obtained against the municipality is R1.3bn.

The power utility company had started attaching the assets of the municipality shortly after getting a favourable judgment. In a post via its official Twitter channel, Eskom had shared pictures and videos of the attachment process.

In one of the clips, vehicles of the municipality are being owed away. You can check out the clip below.

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility company, had secured the judgment from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria after the municipality, which includes Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, failed to settle its outstanding arrears and accounts.

According to Eskom, the power utilities rely on municipalities and all its customers to pay their accounts timely in order to meet its financial obligations. Failure to do so had put the power utility in a tight spot and made it take some drastic decisions like securing a court order to attach the assets of defaulting entities like the Emfuleni Municipality.

Meanwhile, the municipality is scrambling to secure funds to clear its financial obligations and retain its attached assets.
