Over a couple of days, Mzansi has been on a search for the country’s next Chief Justice. The shortlisted candidates include Raymond Zondo, Mandisa Maya, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, and Dustan Mlambo, and a few of them have spoken about why they’re the perfect fit to be the next Chief Justice.
Constitutional Court Judge, Mbuyiseli Madlanga was the first candidate to be interviewed. He spoke about the perception that wealthy South Africans are not comfortable with having black judges hear their cases. He said “The perception is that they do not have confidence in them, which is why those matters are taken from the judicial system and brought before private arbitration,” He promised to get to the bottom of these perceptions if appointed.
Supreme Court of Appeal president, Mandisa Maya, during her interview, spoke about her impressive achievements over the years and called 4 notions arguing against her appointment hollow excuses. She said, “all four excuses have no substance in my view.”
The third candidate to be interviewed, Justice Dustan Mlambo knows his way around the country’s legal system. A former chairperson of Legal Aid South Africa, Mlambo has distinguished himself in the country’s legal scene over the past 30 years.
