Wednesday Unrest: Wits To Charge Or Suspend Students For Destroying School Property

We might have passed the era of fees must fall, but the dram is not exactly over at the University of Witwatersrand. A protest erupted in the institution on Wednesday and some students reportedly damaged some of the properties there, forcing the institution to react according to, suspending some students.

Several reasons have been adduced for the protest by the students (which degenerated into the destruction of school property), including financial exclusion

The Institution’s Campus Protection Services is reportedly reviewing CCTV footage of the incident and it would be used as evidence to either suspend some students or charge them to court for destruction of school property.

Following the protests, the university reportedly implemented additional security measures to prevent a breakdown of law and order. While investigations into the incident continue, students are encouraged to go about their studies. Only those who have caused destruction in the institution have anything to fear about, as the authorities will soon swing into action after gathering all the evidence from installed CCTVs.

The University of the Witwatersrand, known simply as Wits, pops regularly in the news for the activism of its students. So the latest “unrest” might not come as a surprise to those who know the institution.
