Wicknell Chivayo Makes R10 Million Offer To Thomas Mapfumo

Zimbabwean businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo has made an offer to his compatriot, the musician Thomas Mapfumo, to apologise to the ruling Zimbabwean African National Union-Patriotic Frint (ZANU-PF) and get a sum of $500k.

Mapfumo had sided with the opposition on March 17, leading Chivayo to make the offer to the veteran musician to change his stance and join the support band of the ruling party.

Chivayo is more of a government contractor and much of his gifts are conditional to people supporting the ruling party. It is said that he has stopped giving out funds to celebs supporting the ruling party, but he appeared to have made an exception to Mapfumo.

So he offered him $500k (about R10 million) to switch to supporting the ruling party. Of course, by Zimbabwean standards, that’s an impressive sum – pretty hard to resist for a lot of people.

And this brings the question of whether the veteran musician would bury his values and switch to supporting the ruling party to get the money from the businessman.

For the records, Mapfumo switched to supporting the opposition because of what he considers the corruption in the ruling party, among others. Right now, all eyes are on Mapfumo.
