The news of Sunak becoming the new prime minister has seen stocks rising across the country, down to the United States, with analysts noting that it is a good sign for the economy.
Sunak is of Indian origin, and the news of his taking over as the new prime minister has provoked jubilation in the Asian country. An Indian publication spoke of him as an Indian son rising over the empire. And yes, history has been made.
Although he is pro-Brexit like Boris Johnson, the preference was still for him to take over as prime minister because of what one analyst called his “pragmatism.”
With his new office as prime minister, Sunak, a son-in-law to Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, sets the record as the first British prime minister of Indian origin. His ascension comes at a time India and the United Kingdom are trying to reach a free trade deal. Talks had reportedly stalled over fears it might provoke more immigration.
