It’s a tragic end of a journey for former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane as he gave up the ghost after a brief battle to stay alive.
The politico was involved in a ghastly accident that affected his spine over a week ago. At some point, he was said to be in critical condition but stable. But then fate has other ideas. And now, his family is torn by grief.
The family announced his passing via its spokesperson Mike Maile just outside the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg yesterday evening (May 18). He said the former mayor did not respond to treatment and was certified dead at 5:54 pm.
The former mayor was at the hospital for about a week. He’d been rushed there following the accident he had near Gallo Manor in Sandton. He was alone in the car at the time of the accident.
The news of his death has provoked a wave of mourning among friends and those who knew him, as most expected him to recover and continue his campaign for a new mayoral position. But death has other ideas.
